BHO helped define the early dab era, turning concentrates into a premium category. Then bad home extraction, overheated nails, CRC, collapsing prices and the rise of solventless changed what consumers considered top shelf.
2012–2017: The Golden Era
At its peak, butane hash oil, or BHO, could command roughly $60–$120 per gram wholesale.
Premium flower was being transformed into luxury concentrates, and BHO became a major part of the legal concentrate market in states such as California and Colorado.
For a period, concentrates were defined by shatter, wax, slabs and the idea that clarity, snap and potency signaled quality.
“If it don’t shatter, it don’t matter” captured the mentality.
The “Poop Soup” Problem
The same accessibility that helped BHO spread also damaged its reputation.
People began open blasting at home with cans of butane, sometimes using improvised equipment such as PVC tubes. Poor setups created serious fire and explosion risks.
Bad extraction and rushed purging also produced harsh, chemical-tasting concentrates with high residual solvent levels.
Among early dabbers, low-quality homemade oil earned names like “poop soup.”
For some consumers, that first bad experience became their lasting impression of BHO.
The Fat Dab Era
Early dab culture often celebrated excess.
Friends loaded enormous globs of wax onto glowing-hot nails, treating cloud size and coughing fits as part of the show.
People took hits far larger than they could comfortably handle, leading to panic, intense coughing, “dab sweats” and, in some cases, fainting.
For new consumers, one overwhelming dab could be enough to make concentrates feel intimidating rather than appealing.
Red Means Go
The hardware made the experience even harsher.
Early dabbers commonly heated titanium nails until they glowed red, then dropped concentrates directly onto the surface.
The phrase “red means go” became part of the culture.
Those extremely hot dabs could destroy flavor and produce aggressive, uncomfortable hits. Stories of people passing out, including rapper Roscoe, reinforced the perception that dabbing was intense and unforgiving.
Over time, the culture began moving toward lower-temperature dabs, carb caps and e-nails.
The PPM Problem
In BHO, PPM means parts per million, a measurement commonly used when discussing residual solvents.
Backyard sun-purging, rushed processing or poor technique could leave butane, propane or other solvents in the final extract.
High residual solvent levels could contribute to harsh, chemical-tasting dabs and create compliance problems in regulated markets.
Clean, properly processed BHO was expected to test at very low residual solvent levels or ND, meaning not detected, depending on the test and regulatory standard.
CRC: Purification or Trickery?
Color Remediation Column technology, or CRC, became increasingly common as extractors looked for ways to improve color and clean up concentrates.
Used properly, CRC can refine an extract.
But the technique also developed a reputation for making lower-quality inputs appear visually premium.
Dark or rough oil could be filtered into something pale, gold and marketable, even when the starting material was weak.
Aggressive remediation could also strip away desirable flavor and aroma, leaving concentrates flat, dry or chalky. Some brands compensated by adding terpenes back into the final product.
As CRC spread, consumers became increasingly skeptical of concentrates that looked perfect but smoked poorly.
Oversupply & the Price Collapse
BHO also became a victim of its own scale.
Large brands such as Raw Garden helped flood California with affordable live resin selling around $15–$20 at retail.
That changed consumer expectations around price.
Craft hydrocarbon producers now had to compete with mass-produced concentrates that were good enough for many buyers at a fraction of the cost.
As margins tightened, some producers moved toward cheaper inputs and higher-volume processing.
The result was a widening gap between premium hydrocarbon extraction and the low-cost BHO dominating many shelves.
Budtenders Shift the Conversation
Retail education also changed what consumers asked for.
Budtenders increasingly explained differences between CRC-heavy BHO, live resin and solventless concentrates, helping customers understand why products that looked similar could smoke very differently.
As awareness grew, more consumers began associating hash rosin with purity, flavor and top-shelf quality.
The premium concentrate conversation was moving away from appearance and potency alone.
The Solventless Surge
By 2023, solventless rosin reportedly represented about 21% of California’s dab market, roughly doubling its share in 2 years.
Rosin could retail for approximately $45–$90 per gram, far above the sub-$20 concentrates occupying the value end of the shelf.
Its appeal centered on a simple distinction: no hydrocarbon solvent was used in the extraction process.
For consumers chasing terpene expression, premium starting material and craft processing, hash rosin increasingly became the new benchmark.
Legacy
BHO did not disappear. Its position in the market changed.
Hydrocarbon extraction helped build modern dab culture, created the shatter and wax eras, pushed glass and hardware forward and introduced millions of consumers to concentrates.
But the category was damaged by unsafe home extraction, harsh high-temperature dabs, residual solvent concerns, questionable CRC practices and a race toward lower prices.
At the same time, solventless producers successfully repositioned premium concentrates around flavor, process and starting material instead of cloud size and visual clarity.
The fall of BHO was not the end of hydrocarbon extraction.
It was the end of an era when shatter itself was enough to signal top shelf.
