How a small backyard breeding project in San Diego, 5 seeds sent to Michigan and a joking name produced one of modern cannabis’s biggest breakout strains.

It Started in a San Diego Backyard

In 2019, a breeder known as Blockhead Buds was building a personal cannabis seed collection in San Diego.

Seeds were expensive, and he had already invested heavily in his genetic library.

Rather than purchasing everything he might need later, Blockhead began making small crosses for future projects.

While growing Tropicana Cookies F2 plants, he identified a promising male.

That selection would eventually become part of the Super Boof story.

The Original Name Was Blockberry

Blockhead used his selected Tropicana Cookies male to pollinate a particularly aromatic Black Cherry Punch female.

He saved the resulting seeds under the name Blockberry.

There was no major commercial launch planned.

The cross was originally intended for his own collection.

Where Did the Genetics Come From?

The genetic formula was Black Cherry Punch × Tropicana Cookies.

Black Cherry Punch traces back to Purple Punch × Black Cherry Pie.

Tropicana Cookies came from Girl Scout Cookies × Tangie, originally bred by Harry Palms of Bloom Seed Company, with influential subsequent F2 work from Oni Seed Co.

The combination brought together cherry and berry characteristics with the citrus-heavy profile associated with Tropicana Cookies.

5 Seeds Changed Everything

Blockhead later sent 5 Blockberry seeds to a Michigan grower known as Mobilejay.

Mobilejay grew the seeds in a basement and identified one especially promising plant.

He selected that phenotype and gave it an unusual name.

Super Boof.

The name was deliberately ironic, borrowing slang commonly associated with low-quality cannabis.

But the plant itself proved anything but ordinary.

Did Mobilejay Create Super Boof?

The distinction between breeding and selecting matters.

Blockhead made the original seeds. Mobilejay selected the clone that became Super Boof.

Mobilejay did not create a separate genetic cross when he renamed the keeper.

Super Boof was a selected phenotype from the existing Blockberry seed line.

The two names are therefore connected, but they do not necessarily identify every plant from that seed line as the exact same clone.

Why Hash Makers Loved It

Super Boof developed a reputation for strong structure, productive yields and a distinctive combination of citrus, cherry and resin.

Hash makers also recognized its potential for solventless extraction.

Some growers and processors reported approximately 4–5% ice-water hash yields, making it an attractive cultivar for rosin production.

That combination of commercial flower performance and extraction potential helped accelerate its spread.

The Competition Run

Between 2022 and 2025, Super Boof became a familiar name across cannabis competitions.

High Times Cannabis Cup placements in Alaska, Southern California and Arizona set the baseline.

Then 2023 added Emerald Cup Awards recognition for ice water hash, an Ego Clash full-melt gold and an Oregon Leaf Bowl flower category win.

2024 kept the momentum with results from the AZ Growers Cup and the Farmers Cup.

Then in 2025 came a Cowboy Cup win.

The awards helped establish Super Boof beyond its increasingly recognizable name.

2024: Leafly’s Strain of the Year

In December 2024, Leafly named Super Boof its Strain of the Year.

The recognition followed its rapid expansion across dispensary menus, strong interest from budtenders and continuing popularity among flower and hash consumers.

The selection also brought more attention to the two people behind its story: the breeder who made Blockberry and the Michigan grower who found the standout cut.

Legacy

Super Boof began as a small seed-preservation project without a major rollout plan.

Blockhead created Black Cherry Punch × Tropicana Cookies in San Diego.

Mobilejay hunted the seeds in Michigan, selected the clone and gave it the name that caught on nationwide.

The result became a recognizable cultivar for both flower and solventless hash.

One breeder made the seeds. Another grower found the keeper. Together, their work produced Super Boof.
