Runtz became one of the most recognizable cannabis names of its generation, but its origin story has never been free of competing claims.

Late 2017: The Runtz Crew

By late 2017, a small group connected to Cookies SF began promoting a strain called Runtz. The original account identifies:

Yung LB Litt

Ray Bama

Nick

The group began building attention around the new name through Instagram. The early posts became important because they documented the strain before its later popularity created confusion about its origins.

November 2017: The First Public Runtz Rollout

One of the earliest known public references appeared through an Instagram post in November 2017. According to the original account, Sac OG Dre reposted content from Yung LB Litt. The caption included the formula: "#zkittlez x #gelato = #runtz". The posts also teased jars prepared for the Litathon and tagged the Runtz name. The original account identifies these November posts as the first known public rollout of the name. They became important historical evidence because they connected Runtz with the Zkittlez and Gelato combination before later competing stories emerged.

The Emerald Cup Launch

Weeks after the initial Instagram posts, the team brought Runtz to the 2017 Emerald Cup in Santa Rosa. The original account describes the release as selling out quickly. The response reportedly surprised the people involved. Consumers noticed several characteristics:

A recognizable candy nose

Heavy frost

Distinctive flower

Loud, designed mylar packaging

The packaging stood out among the Gelato-heavy products circulating at the time. The release transformed a local project into a statewide conversation.

Zkittlez × Gelato: The Reported Genetic Foundation

The most widely repeated origin account identifies Runtz as: Zkittlez × Gelato #33. According to the original caption, Nick reportedly grew an indoor Zkittlez cut associated with Dying Breed Seeds and crossed it with Gelato. The November 2017 Instagram captions describing Runtz as Zkittlez × Gelato are central to this account. They provide an early public record connecting the name to the reported breeding combination. The original caption describes this as the account most commonly presented in later Runtz histories.

The Gelato #33 Bagseed Theory

A competing story claims Runtz was not originally a planned Zkittlez × Gelato cross. Instead, some accounts describe it as a Gelato #33 bagseed. The original account traces this theory through Reddit, cannabis forums and online comments. According to the original account, it received additional attention after Return of the Alien, associated with Alien Labs, tweeted: "lemon cherry gelato started as runtz — a bagseed of gelato 33." This interpretation conflicts with the November 2017 posts describing the cross as Zkittlez × Gelato. The original account does not present the two explanations as reconciled. Instead, it identifies the competing versions as an important part of the Runtz origin debate.

Is Runtz Just Gelato or Sunset Sherb?

Some skeptics argue that Runtz is simply a more visually striking Gelato or Sunset Sherb phenotype. The original account addresses this criticism by pointing to the reported Zkittlez parent, the documented cross and the distinctive candy-and-gas flavor identity. The caption describes the flavor identity as: Candy and gas rather than straight Gelato. It also identifies the development of an entire Runtz family as evidence that the variety became more than a renamed existing cut. The debate reflects a larger issue in cannabis breeding: distinguishing a genuinely developed hybrid from a familiar phenotype given a new name.

2020: Leafly Names Runtz Strain of the Year

In 2020, Leafly named Runtz Strain of the Year. The original account presents this recognition as an important moment in the strain's rise. By that point, Runtz had moved beyond its original California release and become a widely recognized cannabis name. The award reinforced its position as one of the defining varieties of the period.

Trademarks and the Business Behind the Name

Runtz's popularity also created a complicated intellectual-property environment. The original account identifies several trademark developments. March 2018: Three Steps Ahead, Inc. filed the RUNTZ clothing trademark (Reg. No. 5735131), claiming use beginning in December 2017. The caption also identifies a filing by Cookies' creative arm covering events and services. By 2023, Three Steps Ahead Inc. was filing additional Runtz marks. These filings reflected the growing commercial importance of the name. As the brand expanded, protecting its identity became increasingly important.

Clone-Only Access and the Copycat Market

During the early period, the original Runtz crew kept access to the genetics relatively tight. The original account describes the original distribution as:

Clone-only

Limited to trusted circles

Over time, however, S1 releases, genetic leaks and Runtz-inspired seed projects expanded the market. The result was a flood of products using the Runtz name or attempting to reproduce its characteristics. Some products were legitimate descendants or related breeding projects. Others were imitation products using the popularity of the name. The original account emphasizes that the earliest 2017–2018 posts remain important because they document what Runtz was before imitation products flooded the market.

Legacy: The Importance of the Original Receipts

Runtz's history connects a small California crew with one of the most recognizable cannabis releases of its generation. The late-2017 Instagram posts connected the name with Zkittlez × Gelato. The Emerald Cup release in Santa Rosa helped establish its popularity, while the competing Gelato #33 bagseed theory continued to complicate the story. Leafly's 2020 recognition and the trademark activity through 2023 demonstrated how far the name had traveled. The original account argues that the earliest posts matter because they preserve the history before imitation products and competing claims blurred it.

Verifies the draft's award claim (Runtz was Leafly's 2020 Strain of the Year), that Runtz debuted in December 2017, and that Yung LB first debuted it at the Emerald Cup in Santa Rosa, CA, that month; per Cookies, the Runtz crew was "Ray, Nick, and Yung LB," the lineage is "widely considered to be a cross between Gelato and Zkittlez," a California trademark was filed in early 2018, and Runtz genetics began circulating in 2018 "either as bagseed or cuttings," spawning official and knockoff products. It does not name The Fire Society, does not specify Gelato #33, and does not describe an Emerald Cup sellout.

Verifies that the Zkittlez parent came from Dying Breed Seeds and that Runtz joined the Cookies lineup in 2018, but credits the cross to Ray Bama and Nick jointly (not Nick alone, as the draft states), sampling phenotypes #3 and #7; describes a "soft premiere" at the December 2017 Santa Rosa Emerald Cup involving three pounds of Runtz, 1,000 t-shirts and five models, and confirms the crew as Ray Bama, Nick and Yung LB. It says only "Gelato," never Gelato #33.

Verifies the crew as breeder Nick, rapper Young LB and brand leader Ray Bama, and is the closest third-party support for the draft's sellout claim: Ray Bama and Young LB "officially dropped Runtz at the Emerald Cup" in 2017, "reportedly selling 5 pounds of flower in under 10 minutes" (the quantity conflicts with Weedmaps' three pounds). It also states the Gelato phenotype used to create Runtz is unclear, "though some sources point to Gelato #33," and confirms the original Runtz was never released to the public in seed or clone form by Cookies or the Runtz Crew.

Primary USPTO record: verifies the RUNTZ word mark, U.S. Registration No. 5735131, application filed 17 Mar. 2018 in Class 025 (clothing — "athletic tops and bottoms for casual wear") claiming first use 15 Dec. 2017, exactly matching the draft's filing date and first-use claim, and verifies Three Steps Ahead, Inc. filed further RUNTZ applications in July 2023 (Serial Nos. 98102728 and 98101229, Class 034). However, the record names Three Steps Ahead, Inc. as the mark's owner and nowhere names Nicholas Corbin as the 2018 filer (see FLAG below).

Documents that the well-known "Gelato #33 bagseed" origin story on record belongs to Lemon Cherry Gelato — propagated by the LA crew Backpack Boyz from a bagseed of Connected-brand Gelato #33 (started in 2016, per Jimi Devine writing in High Times in 2022) — and notes LCG has "also been deemed a version of Runtz (Gelato x Z)." No opened source presents the original Runtz itself as a Gelato #33 bagseed, and the "Return of the Alien" tweet quoted in the draft could not be located (see FLAG below).
