Twenty-Five Years in the Soil

Long before “Motley Terpz” existed as a name, Matt Schneider was already embedded in cannabis culture. His path started the traditional way: buying ounces, breaking them down with friends, and eventually growing at home. By the late 2000s, he was operating retail shops of his own. When those closed, Schneider made a decisive move to Humboldt County, shifting fully into cultivation and committing to the agricultural side of the plant.

Santa Barbara Becomes the Base

In 2019, Schneider secured fourteen acres in Santa Barbara County, giving Motley Terpz a permanent foundation. The farm sits near the Santa Ynez River floodplain, with native soil that has been intentionally built year after year. Cover crops, lab-guided amendments, humic and fulvic acids, micronized nutrients, and a heavy emphasis on microbiology define the program. The focus has been long-term soil health rather than short-term yield chasing.

Fresh Frozen or Nothing

The major strategic pivot came with fresh frozen. Initially, about one-third of the farm’s output was diverted into fresh frozen material. That lane quickly proved itself, and today the majority of production is grown specifically for freezing and downstream manufacturing. Finished flower is no longer the priority. The operation is designed around hash inputs and future-facing extraction needs.

Genetics Stay Loaded

Motley Terpz maintains strong relationships with respected breeders, including Happy Dreams, Bloom Seed Co, and Purple City Genetics. A new collaboration with Humboldt Seed Company is slated for the 2025 harvest. One of the most talked-about cultivars from the previous season was Happy Dreams’ Triangle GMO, which became a standout flavor across multiple manufacturing partners.

A Supply Force, Not Just a Brand

Motley Terpz functions less like a consumer-facing brand and more like a supply engine. The operation works with buyers who exclusively want fresh frozen, alongside white-label clients and manufacturers across the state. Schneider has noted that roughly fifty manufacturers are supplied on the frozen side alone, not including additional white-label work or direct buyers.

Harvest as a Community Event

Bringing down fourteen acres each year is an all-hands operation. Fall harvest becomes a high-pressure window defined by long days, unpredictable weather, and full crew coordination. Partners, collaborators, and teams from every department converge on the farm, creating an atmosphere that feels closer to a working festival than a standard harvest cycle.

Built for the Future of Hash

Schneider sees hash-driven cultivation as the long-term direction of the market. He points to the cultural shift toward easier resin consumption, accelerated by devices like Puffco, which lowered the barrier to entry for concentrates. Easier access has driven higher demand, reinforcing the decision to prioritize fresh frozen production.

Infrastructure Over Hype

The Motley Terpz formula is straightforward: grow loud, freeze fresh, supply manufacturers, and continue scaling with intention. The goal is not short-term hype, but durable infrastructure capable of supporting the next phase of cannabis manufacturing.

Loud in the crowd is not a slogan. It is the operating principle behind Motley Terpz.
