Maui Wowie became one of the most recognizable cannabis names of the 1970s. Behind the familiar name was a history involving smuggling networks, Mexican landrace genetics and Afghan hash seeds.
The Brotherhood of Eternal Love
Before Maui Wowie became a recognizable name, the Brotherhood of Eternal Love was building a network around psychedelic culture.
Led by John Griggs, the group pursued what the original account describes as a psychedelic utopia.
Surfers and other members of the movement initially connected through LSD before shifting toward high-grade cannabis.
The movement connected Laguna Beach with Hawaii, particularly Maui.
1970: The Aafje Voyage
The original account identifies the yacht Aafje as an important part of the story.
In 1970, the vessel carried Mexican cannabis known as Lightning Bolt.
In the original account, with Coast Guard attention increasing, Travis Ashbrook and Eddie Padilla diverted the yacht to Hawaii.
They brought cannabis seed stock with them, introducing genetics that would become part of the developing Maui cannabis story.
Lightning Bolt: The Mexican Genetics
Lightning Bolt represented the Mexican landrace-style cannabis common during that period.
The original account describes these plants as:
Tall.
Airy.
Characterized by long colas.
Associated with Mexican landrace genetics.
The caption emphasizes that the quality and freshness of the flower were the important factors behind its reputation.
The name Maui Wowie did not initially describe an entirely new mystery strain.
Kula and the Hawaiian Growing Environment
Maui's growing environment became part of the variety's identity.
However, the original account challenges the idea that the island's soil and salty winds fundamentally transformed the genetics.
The caption argues that the Mexican genetics already came from a similar latitude and tropical environment.
The setting contributed to the story, but it was not necessarily the primary reason for the plants' characteristics.
The Kula Crippier: Afghan Genetics Enter the Picture
The original account identifies a later genetic development involving Afghan hash.
Seeds found in Afghan hash imported from the Tokhi brothers became an important part of the story.
According to the caption, Amanullah and Hayatullah Tokhi were indicted in 1973 alongside members of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love.
According to the caption, the Afghan genetics from these seeds were introduced into the existing Mexican stock.
This created the Mexican and Afghan combination associated with the developing Maui Wowie lineage.
The Name Reaches the Mainland
The original account describes the resulting Mexican-Afghan blend as the variety that became known as Maui Wowie.
When Brotherhood harvests returned to California, the reaction was reportedly immediate.
The name referenced its Hawaiian association and the strong impression the cannabis made on consumers.
Maui Wowie became a recognizable street name that connected the product with its origin and reputation.
Mr. Greengenes and Preservation
Mr. Greengenes is credited in the original account with preserving late-1970s Maui Wowie seeds.
The caption states that he line-bred those genetics into Cherry Bomb IBL.
This preservation work helped maintain what became known as the old Maui lineage.
Hollywood Makes Maui Wowie a Household Name
By the late 1970s, Maui Wowie had become a recognizable reference in popular culture.
Cheech & Chong's Up in Smoke helped cement the name as shorthand for premium cannabis.
The film brought the reference beyond surfer and cannabis circles into mainstream entertainment.
Legacy: Mexican Roots, Afghan Influence and Hawaiian Identity
The original account presents Maui Wowie as a specific genetic development rather than simply a product of Hawaiian geography.
Its story connects Mexican landrace genetics, Afghan hash-derived seeds and the Brotherhood of Eternal Love's distribution network.
Preservation work by Mr. Greengenes helped carry the older genetics forward.
Through music, film and cannabis culture, Maui Wowie became one of the defining names associated with 1970s cannabis.

Profiles Brotherhood founding member Travis Ashbrook: John Griggs founded the Brotherhood around LSD proselytizing in Laguna Beach (incorporated 26 Oct. 1966); Ashbrook's Kandahar runs from winter 1967 sourced hashish from brothers Nazrullah and Hayatullah Tokhi; and Ashbrook bought the schooner Aafje, loaded 5,000 lbs of Mexican weed and unloaded it at Makena beach, Maui — "it was from this load of primo Mexi weed, crossed with seeds from an Afghani load, that the legendary Maui Wowie strain was later born." Schou's book, as quoted by the Brotherhood's own history archive: "Padilla arrived on the island in May 1970 by the most arduous route imaginable... he sailed to Maui on the Aafje, a 70-foot yacht the Brotherhood had loaded with a ton of high-quality Mexican marijuana it dubbed 'Lightning Bolt,' the clones of which, when planted on Maui, became the legendary 'Maui Wowie' strain" — the boat strayed off course because it had no functioning navigational equipment. The archive's own summary adds that Padilla and Brotherhood associates purchased the Aafje in early 1970.

Sworn testimony reproduced by the archive states that "according to subsequent indictment," the Brotherhood's most important foreign hashish contact, developed in late 1967 or early 1968, was the Tokhi brothers of the outskirts of Kabul, and names Aman Tokhi as "the Brotherhood's chief supplier in Kabul"; the page also records that the Brotherhood brought cannabis seeds back from Afghanistan, Nepal and other Hippie Trail stops.

Quotes pages from Schou's Orange Sunshine documenting "how Maui Wowie came about in Hawaii. It was a cross of landrace sativa from Sinaloa and Afghan Kush. The Brotherhood was getting a lot of seeds for free when they were buying their hash in Afghanistan to smuggle into USA, and their Mexican was hand picked by a druglord called Papa who was based in a village above Guadalajara" — corroborates the Mexican × Afghan cross and the free-seed-alongside-hash mechanism from Schou's reporting.

Detailed dialogue summary of Cheech & Chong's first feature (1978) preserves the exchange — Pedro: "Hey, what's in this s--t, man?" Stoner: "It's mostly Maui Wowie, man... but it's got some Labrador in it" — verifying that Up in Smoke name-checked Maui Wowie and carried it to a mainstream audience.

Quotes Swami Organic Seed's own strain descriptions: "Mr Greengenes who is the originator of 70s Maui Wowie IBL, also known as Cherry Bomb was also a BOEL member, and supplies SOS with his original BOEL Maui Wowie genetics. Swami is the only authorized holder of his original genetics" — corroborates the draft's claim that Mr. Greengenes preserved the late-1970s Maui Wowie and line-bred it as the Cherry Bomb IBL.
