How an almost-lost phenotype, disputed pollen & a $50,000 gamble turned GUZ into one of the most talked-about modern cannabis cuts.
The Breeder’s Base
Jamie launched Surefire Selections in 2017, building his work through seed hunts and carefully selected breeding stock.
Boston Roots later sent him Sherbanger F1 seeds. Jamie selected a male and crossed it to Lemon Up, the Mr. Kushington Cut, keeping 2 standout females.
Number 2 became Blueberry Lemonade. Number 1 became the seed parent behind GUZ.
The Connection Before GUZ
Before GUZ and before the later ZOO relationship, a mutual friend introduced Ran of Elusive to Bobby of B-Eazy at Bobby’s Hollywood office.
Bobby initially passed on Ran’s flower.
Gabe aka Packs to the Future kept the relationship alive, and later batches of Ran’s Aquanaut changed Bobby’s opinion. That connection eventually created the partnership that GUZ would need.
The Mystery Pollen
In late 2023, Surefire traded a Lemon Up cut for a Giraffe Puzzy cut, a cultivar associated with Doja Pak & Seed Junky, along with pollen that was represented as Giraffe Puzzy pollen.
There were no restrictions attached to the trade.
Jamie used that pollen on Lemon Up × Sherbanger #1, creating the seed population that eventually produced GUZ.
The paternal side remains disputed. According to the account, Seed Junky later acknowledged that the pollen was actually something else, meaning GUZ’s exact male lineage has never been fully resolved.
The Pheno That Almost Disappeared
Surefire made roughly 14 hybrids and dedicated his entire 12-light room to hunting through the resulting plants.
One selection stood out: #19.
But before it could even be fully evaluated, the plant nearly disappeared.
Jamie had broken its backup branch down to a tiny remaining node and struggled to get it rooted. The future GUZ cut was almost lost before anyone outside the room knew what it was.
The Outlier
Around the same period, Bobby was publicly searching for genetics.
He was reportedly taking as many as 4 breeder meetings a day, looking for an exclusive cultivar that could shift the market. Strains like Blue Zushi & RS11 had shown what a truly differentiated cut could become.
Gabe eventually brought him approximately 10 phenotypes to evaluate.
Number 19 was different.
The Lemon influence remained in the background, but the dominant aroma did not smell like the other options. Bobby took 7 grams home, shared none of it and later realized he missed the profile when he returned to smoking Zebraz.
That reaction made #19 hard to forget.
The $50,000 Second Chance
Surefire initially asked $60,000 for the cut, partly because he expected the price to scare Bobby away.
Gabe reportedly tried to structure a deal closer to $25,000–$30,000, but Bobby walked.
Weeks later, the group presented the options again without telling him which was which.
Bobby chose #19 for a second time.
At that point, the fear was that another brand would recognize the same thing and secure the cut first.
Bobby paid $50,000.
The decision was mocked online, but another important blind evaluation reinforced the selection. Ran also chose #19 by smell.
From Animal TBA 19 to GUZ
The cut first appeared as Animal TBA 19.
Bobby originally planned to name it Lionz, playing on the idea of the “king of the jungle.”
That changed while he was smoking the flower.
He renamed the strain GUZ, after his dog.
The final structure behind the release became clear: Surefire Selections bred it, B-Eazy branded it, Elusive LA grew the official flower, and Packs to the Future helped connect the pieces.
The Breakout
GUZ quickly became associated with scarcity and exclusivity.
The strain developed a reputation as one of the most sought-after cuts moving through the modern traditional market, helped by the story of its selection, the disputed pollen and the $50,000 price attached to the clone.
In 2026, GUZ won California Zalympix People’s Choice for Best Terps/Best Smell and received the Industry Most Unique award.
The same pheno that nearly disappeared as a struggling backup node had become the center of the brand.
Legacy
GUZ was not built from a perfectly documented pedigree. Its paternal lineage remains disputed.
What is clear from the firsthand account is the selection story: Surefire created the population, #19 nearly disappeared, Bobby independently chose it twice, Ran also selected it by smell, and B-Eazy ultimately paid $50,000 for the cut despite public ridicule.
The breeder created it. The grower proved it. The brand made the bet.
Then the market validated the gamble.
