🌱 Late 70s: The Foundation
In 1978, Kenneth Morrow begins cultivating cannabis hydroponically at 13 years old, in grade 9, with his mother’s permission. That year he encounters blond and red Lebanese hashish, followed in 1981 by Afghani hash and Panamanian, Mexican, Colombian & Thai cultivars. In 1979 or 1980, he takes his first hit of unusually clean, clear amber honey oil. It becomes his benchmark for flavor, cleanliness & potency.
🌲 1980s: Commercial Scale & Kief Mastery
Kenneth begins trafficking cannabis at 15 & continues through the late 80s and early 90s. Humboldt County growers introduce him to commercial cultivation and an abundance of high-quality trim. His attention shifts from flower to capitate-stalked trichome heads. Basic sieving leads him to freeze and sieve fresh frozen material, preventing screen clogging while improving yield, aroma & flavor.
From 1989–93, he researches and uses both aeroponics & fogponics for propagation and cultivation. He combines what he learns into repeatable, consistent & predictable processes.
🧪 1990s: Water Hash, Trichome Technologies & Solvent Extraction
Kenneth continues his dry and fresh-frozen sieve education and quest for super-refined extracts. In 1994 he receives basic water-hash isolation instructions, then investigates and scales the process. He replaces ice with a titanium water chiller for precise temperatures and uses fresh frozen material to minimize contamination. The result is a more aromatic, flavorful isolate, made before water-hash bags are available.
Around 1997–98, Ken shows Mila Jansen ice water hash outside Berkeley Indoor Garden, before Bubbleman’s or Mila’s bags are sold.
🧬 1994: Trichome Technologies Is Formed
Trichome Technologies forms in 1994. Ken prioritizes trichome production, environmental control, repeatability & consistency over yield or appearance. He builds advanced indoor hydro and aeroponic systems and a breeding program that later totals over 200 proprietary cultivars. Purple Kush / Ultra Violet is only one.
🟣 Mid 90s: Purple Kush → Ultra Violet
First called Purple Kush, the standout clone is renamed Ultra Violet after widespread plagiarism. The stabilized, resin-forward line spreads globally.
🧊 1994: Solvent Extraction Begins
In early 1994, Kenneth investigates solvent extraction and begins extracting with butane.

Kenneth appears in Morley Safer’s 60 Minutes segment “American Enterprise.”
📡 1996: CNN “Higher Times”
CNN’s “Higher Times” features Kenneth and his nutrient-film-technique cultivation system.

🔬 1997: Validation Year
Kenneth becomes the second private grower to have samples tested at the University of Mississippi. His G-13 tests at 27.2% THC and his water hash at 68.6% THC.
From 1997–2000, he wins 9 California cannabis awards, taking 1st, 2nd & 3rd in his first competition.
⚖️ 1998: Deputized & First Branded Hash
On September 8, 1998, the Oakland Cannabis Buyers Cooperative deputizes him as an agent and identifies him as a duly authorized “officer of the City of Oakland,” citing immunity under 21 U.S.C. §885(d).
In 1998 he creates the first branded hash, “KIF.”
🏆 1999: High Times Magazine
In January 1999, High Times features “Trichome Tech: A Scientific Approach to Growing” and names Trichome Technologies the “Best Growroom in the 25-year history of the magazine.” The June issue revisits the garden in a feature on the leading growrooms from High Times’ first 25 years. In October, it publishes “Return to Trichome Tech.”
đź“° April 2000: High Times Guide to Making Hash
“Trichome Technologies Guide to Making Hash” explains dry sieving and making water hash without extraction bags. The article is included in Robert C. Clarke’s book Hashish and republished multiple times. The underlying method was developed before separation bags were available.
🍂 October 2000: Harvest Time
High Times publishes “Harvest Time at Trichome Tech.”
đź“ť 2002: First Published BHO How-To
BHO hits print. Ken publishes “Captain Butane Saves the Day” in The Red Eye Express, a pre-dab-culture how-to documenting solvent extraction before standardized tools exist.
đź“š 2000s: Teaching Through Magazines
He begins teaching through magazines beyond High Times and The Red Eye Express. His work appears in Burst High in Japan, Skunk, Heads, Cañamo, Cannabis Now, Greenhouse Management, Cannabis Business Times and many more. Ken’s step-by-step methods move the culture forward while it remains underground.
In the early 2000s, Ken publishes technical work on purging standards, solvent behavior under vacuum and wax/lipid contamination. Extraction becomes written as chemistry, repeatability, safety & stability.
🌍 2004: Cuba
In 2004 Ken smuggles cultivation books and cannabis genetics into Cuba. High Times publishes “Trichome Technologies Invades Cuba” in April 2006, reprints it in Best of High Times 2006 and publishes the story a 3rd time. It also appears in The Red Eye Express.
🌿 September 2006: High Times “Hydro Kings”

🏠March 2011: Inside the Resin Factory
High Times publishes “Inside the Resin Factory.”
⚗️ October 2012: Waxes, Lipids & The Vacuum Oven Pivot
Ken co-authors “Waxes and Lipids and Fats, Oh My: The Quest for Pure BHO” for High Times.
Ken becomes the first to reconfigure an Across International vacuum drying oven for cannabis extracts. He adds a digital vacuum gauge, stronger internal hoses and clamps, staged heat and vacuum-pressure control. The proof of concept becomes an industry standard.
🧫 2012: Terpene Isolation
Ken becomes the first to perform and pursue a patent for a cannabis-terpene isolation method.
đź“° July 2013: Cleaning Concentrates
High Times publishes “Art & Science of Cleaning Concentrates Part 2,” described as the magazine’s first mention of a vacuum drying oven, thin-layer evaporation and winterization.
🏷️ October 2013: Trademark
Trichome Technologies becomes what Ken identifies as the first trademarked cannabis consulting company.
📰 July 2014: High Times “Kings of Concentrate”
Ken is included in the High Times “Kings of Concentrate” dab report.
🏅 July 2014: Contributions to the Industry
Chalice presents Ken with its “Contributions to the Industry” award.
🏆 November 2014: High Times 40th Anniversary
In its 40th-anniversary issue, High Times selects Trichome Technologies among the “Greatest Pot Gardens of All Time” and the most innovative grows from 40 years of groundbreaking cultivation coverage.

Ken contributes photos and technical material to the cover of Ed Rosenthal’s Big Book of Buds, Jason King’s Cannabible #1, Jorge Cervantes’ Grow Basics and Cannabis Encyclopedia, Greg Green’s Cannabis Grow Bible, Vols. 1–4, and Robert C. Clarke’s revised Hashish.
🧪 2014: Microencapsulation
Ken develops microencapsulated cannabinoid and terpene formulations for pharmaceutical applications.
⚗️ 2014: Separated Cannabinoids & Terpenes
At the High Times Cannabis Cup in Seattle, Washington, Ken becomes the first to enter separated cannabinoids and terpenes in competition.
🔬 2015: Bioavailable & Soluble Isolates
His research expands into bioavailable and water-soluble cannabinoid and terpene isolates for pharmaceutical applications.

Ken becomes a columnist and member of the magazine’s Board of Advisors, roles he continues to hold.

Ken authors Marijuana Horticulture Fundamentals and Hashish Production, a 400-page book reported to have sold over 15,000 copies.

The American Society of Business Publication Editors awards Ken a Regional Bronze Azbee Award for his regular Cannabis Business Times column, “Tomorrow in Cannabis.”
