Fresh-frozen extraction existed before the name. The breakthrough came when Colorado extractors refined the process, made it repeatable & gave modern live resin its identity.
Before Live Resin Had a Name
Freshly harvested cannabis contains volatile compounds that begin changing during drying, curing & storage.
Long before live resin became a category, extractors were already experimenting with ways to capture more of that fresh profile by freezing material soon after harvest.
Early Fresh-Frozen BHO
By the early 1990s, Kenneth Morrow was reportedly using and writing about fresh-frozen BHO.
That places fresh-frozen hydrocarbon extraction well before the modern live resin era.
The important distinction is that the method existed before the name. Live resin was not the first time cannabis had been frozen and extracted with butane.
Kind Bill’s Early Experiments
Around 2011, Colorado hash maker William “Kind Bill” Fenger froze an entire Original Diesel plant and open-blasted it with butane.
According to the account, the flavor immediately stood out.
The process still had major limitations. Appearance was poor, yields were low & open blasting presented serious safety problems. The result showed potential, but it was not yet a repeatable production method.
Fresh-Frozen BHO in Colorado
Fresh-frozen BHO was also being discussed publicly by 2011.
Saman Razani and Dustin Mahon of Better Concentrates were producing liquid-nitrogen “fresh frozen BHO” in Colorado before live resin became an established name.
These examples matter because they show that multiple extractors were exploring fresh-frozen hydrocarbon extraction before the category was formalized.
2013: Closed-Loop Changes the Process
In April 2013, Kind Bill began working with Giddy, founder of Emotek, on cold closed-loop extraction.
The steel closed-loop system offered far greater control than the glass-tube open-blasting methods used in earlier experiments.
That control became critical to transforming fresh-frozen extraction from an interesting experiment into something more consistent.
Learning What Not to Remove
One early run combined frozen Chem Dog, Chem #4 & Big Poppa OG trim.
According to the account, excessive vacuum stripped away some of the qualities the team was trying to preserve.
The lesson was important: freezing the plant was only half of the process.
Temperature, pressure, vacuum & post-processing all influenced whether the final concentrate retained the fresh characteristics they wanted.
The Gaia’s Garden Breakthrough
At Gaia’s Garden, grower Phillip Hague supplied whole-plant Tres Star for what is described as the first successful run of the refined process.
Additional cultivars followed, including East Coast Panama Chunk, Chem D, DJ Short’s Flo & Big Poppa OG.
Tres Star later won Connoisseur’s Choice at that year’s Colorado Secret Cup, helping validate the quality of the new extraction approach.
From “Living Resin” to Live Resin
Kind Bill initially called the product “living resin.”
During the Gaia’s Garden sessions, Hague and Gaia’s then-CEO shortened the term to “live rez.”
The name ultimately became live resin, describing concentrate produced from cannabis frozen after harvest rather than first being dried and cured.
That name gave an existing extraction idea a recognizable category.
Live Resin Versus Hash Rosin
Live resin also opened a different production lane from hash rosin.
Hash rosin depends heavily on cultivars whose trichome heads separate effectively during washing. Cold hydrocarbon extraction can process cultivars that may be more difficult to wash while still recovering resin from fresh-frozen material.
That gave producers access to a broader range of cultivars and allowed more of the harvested plant to become concentrate.
For consumers, the appeal was a louder fresh-frozen profile and a distinctly intense dab experience.
Legacy
Kind Bill & Giddy did not invent fresh-frozen extraction.
Kenneth Morrow and other extractors were experimenting with fresh-frozen BHO earlier, while additional Colorado producers were pursuing similar ideas before live resin became a named category.
Their breakthrough was refining fresh-frozen extraction through cold closed-loop processing, learning how to preserve the qualities lost in earlier attempts & helping establish the modern form of the product.
Fresh-frozen extraction came first. Live resin became the system, the refinement & the name that endured.
