How a flipped number, early internet dab culture & a growing concentrate scene gave cannabis oil its own holiday.
The Oil Code
7/10 became the concentrate holiday because 710, flipped upside down, reads “OIL.”
That simple visual gave July 10 a natural identity for hash oil, wax, shatter, rosin, resin, diamonds, sauce, vape oil & dabs.
While 4/20 represented cannabis broadly, 7/10 gave concentrates a date of their own.
Tinychat Roots
The strongest origin trail points to early 2010s internet dab culture, not a dispensary campaign or corporate marketing push.
According to TaskRok’s firsthand account, the idea developed through Tinychat sessions before spreading into forums and among hash makers, glass artists & oil enthusiasts.
The holiday began inside the culture that was already building around concentrates.
TaskRok & the 710 Idea
TaskRok, founder of Highly Educated, says the group wanted a new time associated specifically with dabs.
He has credited himself with suggesting 710 after recognizing that the number spelled OIL when turned upside down, while also emphasizing that the wider group helped turn the idea into a movement.
The origin, by his telling, was collaborative rather than the work of one person alone.
The Early Circle
The group surrounding those early conversations included Chad Soren of Health Stone Glass, OG & UThinkSoo of Beehive Oil Clothing, Cole Ainsworth, Buddhacheeeze & Baby Kush Dabs 710.
Together, they were part of an emerging network where concentrate production, glass, titanium hardware, music & online cannabis culture were beginning to overlap.
That community gave 710 a foundation before the date reached a wider audience.
Dab Culture Finds Its Own Lane
By this period, concentrates were developing their own tools, techniques & rituals.
Torches, nails, domes, rigs, titanium, BHO, hash oil & new extraction technology created an experience that felt increasingly separate from traditional flower culture.
4/20 still belonged to cannabis as a whole. Dab culture was beginning to want an identity of its own.
2011: The Public Footprints
By 2011, 710 was appearing publicly as a reference to cannabis oil.
The widely cited TokeCity thread “Happy 710 Toke City!! (Oil Day)” helped move the concept beyond private chats and into the broader concentrate community.
According to the origin account, TaskRok & Linus also pushed the movement publicly on July 10, 2011, releasing songs including “7:10” and “Boil That Oil.”
These early footprints helped turn an inside code into something recognizable.
2013: The Breakout
By 2013, 710 was moving beyond internet circles.
LA Weekly described 710 as the new 420, while Aqua Lab Technologies launched what is described in this account as the first 710 sale.
The date was becoming commercially visible, but its roots remained tied to the concentrate community that had already been using it.
The First Dab Festival
Also in 2013, Denver hosted a 3-day 710 Cup at the Wright Group Event Center.
The event was billed as America’s first dab festival, bringing extract technicians together to compete for the best hash while attendees gathered around torches, rigs, hot glass, oil & emerging concentrate technology.
What had started as online oil language was becoming a physical event culture.
Legacy
7/10 grew from a flipped-number code inside underground oil circles into the recognized holiday for cannabis concentrates.
Tinychat conversations, TokeCity threads, music, glass culture, extract makers & early dab events all helped carry the idea outward.
Concentrates were exploding, dabbers wanted an identity of their own & July 10 became the day cannabis oil got its holiday.
