THE HIGHEST CRITIC: CALEB CHEN

Puff, Then Push

Caleb Chen first smoked on 4/20/2010 in Virginia. Within months, he began flipping small amounts to maintain steady access to his newfound medicine. Nights were spent online, comparing data across platforms like Seedfinder, THC Farmer, and IC Mag to better understand cultivar names, lineage claims, and the evolving language of cannabis genetics.

Site Launch (2018)

After leaving a position as marketing director at a VPN company, Chen moved into a van and launched TheHighestCritic.com. His mission was straightforward: create a space to document and review cultivars in a format that highlighted what connoisseurs were actually smoking—licit or illicit. It was about archiving the best flower, not chasing trends.

Early Cultivar Reviews

The site’s first content focused on small-batch genetics rarely covered elsewhere. Reviews of cultivars like Pink Boost Goddess set the tone, alongside coverage of events such as the California State Fair Cannabis Awards and the East Coast Connoisseur Cup. Each entry broke down lineage, breeder, terpene profile, cultivation method, and smoke quality.

Expansion

By 2021, The Highest Critic had grown into a collective of more than 100 contributors across the U.S., U.K., Europe, and Thailand. Despite the network’s reach, Chen maintained his role as lead editor, ensuring consistency and focus on craft flower and hash.

Credentials and Research

Chen became a Certified Ganjier in 2022 and a Budist Critic in 2023. He graduated from Cal Poly Humboldt in 2024, supported by a $25,000 NextGen fellowship to study prohibition’s impact on breeders. His thesis, “Post-Prohibition Changes in Cannabis Genetics” (2025), documents genetic bottlenecking through direct breeder interviews and ethnographic research.

Judging Roles

Chen’s credibility has been reinforced through his judging positions. He has evaluated flower at the Cowboy Cup, Cannifest, and the East Coast Connoisseur Cup. In 2024 and 2025, he was selected as a flower judge for the first state-sanctioned cannabis competition in the U.S.: the California State Fair Cannabis Awards.

Cultivation Stance

Chen consistently advocates for both sun-grown and light-assisted cultivation. His philosophy centers on genetic diversity, grower intent, lineage transparency, and measurable results over marketing claims. For him, flower is defined by substance, not slogans.

Ongoing Work

Beyond reviews, Chen moderates r/trees and works as a research associate with Dominic Corva on a DCC-funded legacy genetics study. His focus includes open-source ethnographic interviews and database building—linking COAs, lineages, and grow styles to better support both breeders and researchers.

Overview

Today, TheHighestCritic.com functions as a searchable archive of cultivar reviews, hash evaluations, interviews, and cultural recaps. Its core remains unchanged: championing small-batch flower, rare genetics, legacy operators, and the global consumer community.
